The aim of this study was to translate and validate the Arabic version of the Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQR-A). Translation of the FIQR followed a worldwide-recognized approach to ensure the accuracy and equivalency of the translation from the English version of the FIQR. Following the translation of the FIQR, 92 women with fibromyalgia completed the FIQR-A, the Arabic Research ANd Development Short Form Health Survey (RAND SF-36), and the Arabic Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scales (HADS). The FIQR-A significantly correlated with RAND SF-36 domains and HADS. The correlations ranged from fair to moderate. For selected outcomes, Bland-Altman plots were consistent with Spearman's correlations. Test-retest intraclass correlation coefficients were all significant and ranged from moderate to excellent. Internal consistency was found to be excellent. These observations suggest that the FIQR-A is a valid and reliable tool for both clinical practice and research purposes with Arabic speakers globally.

The Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ-R) is an updated version of the FIQ attempts to address the limitations of the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ). As there is no Moroccan version of the FIQ-R available, we aimed to investigate the validity and reliability of a Moroccan translation of the FIQR in Moroccan fibromyalgia (FM) patients. After translating the FIQR into Moroccan, it was administered to 80 patients with FM. All of the patients filled out the questionnaire together with Arabic version of short form-36 (SF-36). The tender-point count was calculated from tender points identified by thumb palpation. Three days later, FM patients filled out the Moroccan FIQR at their second visit. The test-retest reliability of the Moroccan FIQR questions ranged from 0.72 to 0.87. The test and retest reliability of total FIQR score was 0.84. Cronbach's alpha was 0.91 for FIQR visit 1 (the first assessment) and 0.92 for FIQR visit 2 (the second assessment), indicating acceptable levels of internal consistency for both assessments. Significant correlations for construct validity were obtained between the Moroccan FIQ-R total and domain scores and the subscales of the SF-36 (FIQR total versus SF-36 physical component score and mental component score were r = -0.69, P < 0.01 and r = -0.56, P < 0.01, respectively). The Moroccan FIQ-R showed adequate reliability and validity. This instrument can be used in the clinical evaluation of Moroccan and Arabic-speaking patients with FM.

BACKGROUND: The fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ) relates to the functional capacity, professional situation, psychological disorders, and physical symptoms, and can identify the factors that determine the impact of the syndrome and characteristics of its carriers; the higher the score, the greater the impact of fibromyalgia on the quality of life. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of fibromyalgia on the quality of life of individuals with fibromyalgia, who were categorized according to the FIQ during the coronavirus disease pandemic. DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional study was conducted at an institution of higher education in Taquara, RS, Brazil. METHODS: A quantitative study was carried out, with the application of a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, and the FIQ in 163 Brazilian individuals with a medical diagnosis of fibromyalgia. Data were collected using SurveyMonkey software. RESULTS: Of the female carriers, 98.2% were living in urban areas, working, and under pharmacological and complementary treatment. The FIQ results showed that seven of the 10 items had the maximum score. The items “physical function” and “feel good” had intermediate scores, and the item “missed work” had a low score. The average total score was 79.9 points, indicating that fibromyalgia had a severe impact on the participants’ lives. A severe impact of fibromyalgia was observed in 61.3% of the participants, a moderate impact in 30.7%, and a low impact in 8%. CONCLUSION: The survey findings suggest a severe impact in the majority of the Brazilian fibromyalgic population.

Objective. Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by chronic widespread pain and both physical and emotional alterations, which in turn may affect the individual's quality of life. Thus, interventions aimed at treating such symptoms, without increasing fatigue, are needed. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of high-frequency transcranial magnetic stimulation (HF-TMS) and physical exercise (PE) on pain, impact of FM, physical conditioning, and emotional status in women with FM. Methods. Forty-nine women with FM were randomly allocated to: (1) a PE group (PEG, n = 16), who underwent an 8-week (two 60-minute sessions/wk) low-intensity PE program; (2) a TMS group (TMSG, n = 17) receiving a 2-week (five 20-minute sessions/wk) HF-TMS intervention; and (3) a control group (CG, n = 16). Pain (ie, perceived pain and average pressure pain threshold), perceived impact of FM (ie, overall impact, symptoms, and perceived physical function), physical conditioning (ie, endurance and functional capacity, fatigue, gait velocity, and power), and emotional status (ie, anxiety, depression, stress, and satisfaction) were assessed at baseline (T0) and after the intervention (T1, at 2 weeks for TMSG and at 8 weeks for PEG and CG).Results. The TMSG showed significant improvement in all studied variables after the intervention except for satisfaction, whereas the PEG showed improved average pressure pain threshold, perceived overall impact of FM and total score, endurance and functional capacity, velocity and power, anxiety, depression, and stress. In contrast, the CG showed no improvements in any variable.Conclusion. Both PE and HF-TMS are effective in improving pain, impact of FM, physical conditioning, and emotional status in people with FM; HF-TMS achieved larger improvements in emotional status than PE.Impact. TMS and PE have similar benefits for physical status, whereas TMS has greater benefits than PE for emotional status in women with FM.

OBJECTIVE: To validate a translated Italian version of the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ). METHODS: The Italian version of the FIQ was administered to 50 patients affected by fibromyalgia (FM) (48 patients filled out the questionnaire again 10 days later) together with the Italian version of the Stanford Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), the Medical Outcomes Survey Short Form-36 (SF-36), and a tender point count (TPC) obtained by summing the score (0-3) of each tender point tested by thumb palpation. All patients were asked about the severity of pain today (10 cm visual analog scale) and the duration of symptoms. Test-retest reliability was assessed using Spearman correlations. Internal consistency was evaluated with Cronbach's alpha of reliability. Construct validity of the FIQ was evaluated by correlations between the HAQ and subscales of the SF-36 as well as the TPC. RESULTS: The mean duration of symptoms was 6.5 years and the mean age of the participants was 57.4 years. Test-retest reliability was between 0.74 and 0.95 for physical functioning as well as for the total FIQ and other components. Internal consistency was 0.90 for the overall FIQ. Significant correlations were obtained between the FIQ items, the HAQ and the SF-36. CONCLUSIONS: The Italian FIQ is a reliable and valid instrument for detecting and measuring functional disability and health status in Italian patients with FM.

Objective The role of age in influencing the severity of fibromyalgia (FM) is still controversial. The aim of this study is to define the contribution of age in the severity of FM from data from a large national database. Methods This cross-sectional study included adult patients with FM diagnosed according to the 2010/2011 American College of Rheumatology criteria. Disease severity was assessed with the revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQR) and the modified Fibromyalgia Assessment Status (FAS 2019mod). Patients were grouped into five age categories (between 18-40 years, between 41- 50 years, between 51-60 years, between 61-70 years, and =71 years). Differences in disease severity between groups were assessed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results The study included 2889 patients (199 males and 2690 females), mean age of 52.58 (+/- 11.82) years, with a mean FIQR score of 59.22 (+/- 22.98) and a mean FAS 2019mod of 25.50 (+/- 8.66). Comparing the mean values of the various indices between age categories, there were no statistically significant differences between the groups for FIQR total score and FAS 2019mod. However, the 60-70 years category showed the lowest scores for both scales. The main difference emerged for the FIQR physical function subscale, where the =71 years category showed significantly higher scores (p<0.05) compared the 18-40 years category. Conclusion The severity of FM has a significant level of stationarity according to age categories. Patients between 60-70 years have a lower disease burden. Physical function is the health domain with the most significant difference between the groups.
